History Con Philippines 2017 promised to be bigger, better, and bolder and the moment you enter, you will see that they’ve definitely delivered. That day was like seeing a history book unfold right in front of my eyes. I simply knew I was in for something grand.
Cars, geeky pieces, and the excited crowd were just some of the things that started off our day last August 10, 2017 at the World Trade Center Manila. There were Filipino products from the past that I was familiar with. Vintage cameras I adored were also present, and even comic book characters long unheard of were being introduced once more to the public.
A Series of Legendary Moments
History Con Philippines wouldn’t definitely be complete without the spectacular shows of History Channel and FYI Network, with different themes about life all of these shows amazed and some educated us in their own unique ways. Before lunch time, the conference was introduced with this year’s guests namely from History Channel’s Corey Harrison of Pawn Stars, “Horny” Mike Henry of Counting Stars, Danielle Colby of The Pickers, Ryu Lim of Forged in Fire, Jaime Dempsey of Ride & Seek, Justin Mott of Photo Face Off, Phoemela Baranda of Celebrity Car Wars, Simon Yin of The History Hustle, FYI Network’s Zack Giffin and John Weisbarth of Tiny House Nation, Adam Liaw of Destination Flavour, and notable guests, Jordan Kilganon, Takeru Kobayashi, and NASA Astronaut Barry “Butch” E. Wilmore, (Captain, U.S. Navy).
Moments later the media conference finally started, all the stars were introduced once more by host, Paolo Bediones. A lot were excited for Pawn Stars’ Harrison, while our team’s excited for Ride & Seek’s Dempsey, and I’m excited for Tiny House Nation’s Giffin and Weisbarth.
“If you could guest star in one of the shows, what show would it be” was just one of the interesting questions that was asked. And with that question the giddiness of each star was seen in their eyes as they excitedly shared the shows that they wanted to guest. Some wanted to crash cars with Celebrity Car Wars and some simply want to travel with Ride & Seek.
The Philippine Exploration
In the latest season of Ride & Seek the show was said to explore the country’s grandiose beauty from its northern most part up to its southern region. Our Associate Editor even shared that during their trip in Batanes for the latest issue of Explore Philippines, Dempsey was in the same SkyJet flight as them. People like her empower me to discover more inspiring or historical stories of the Philippines.
“What’s the most interesting historical fact that you’ve learned during your exploration in the Philippines?” I then asked Dempsey.
“One of the most interesting things that I’ve found out was recently when I was in Surigao City. I’ve visited a museum with a lot of relics from World War II and one in particular was a Japanese torpedo that is the most intact WWII torpedo. They were telling me a story about a US Naval Officer that came to visit the museum and he found out (while visiting there) that the torpedo was actually meant for the ship that he was on.”
Just like Dempsey, this story gave me the chills and reminded us that the province is truly more than just its amazing natural resources, because each place in our beautiful archipelago has its own living past.
